Talk to your pharmacist before taking other over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, or insomnia medications. These products may contain medicines similar to cyproheptadine, which could lead to an overdose of antihistamine.

Take cyproheptadine exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Follow the dosage amount recommended by your doctor. On average, your physician will likely recommend you take between 12 mg to 16 mg of the medicine each day. However, the therapeutic range for adults is anywhere from 4 mg to 20 mg daily. Pediatric patients will be given between 2 mg to 4 mg of the drug daily to control symptoms.
