Report any side effects to your doctor you may have when taking Periactin. Side effects could include dizziness, dry mouth, headache, incontinence and fatigue. Drinking alcohol can worsen your side effects. If you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or difficulty breathing, seek out emergency care right away.

Periactin is an antihistamine given to help relieve cold - and allergy-related symptoms such as hay fever, nasal inflammation, stuffy nose, red and inflamed eyes, hives, and swelling. Periactin may also be given after epinephrine to help treat anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking cyproheptadine. Do not take cyproheptadine if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A very dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.
